The McIntyre Exam Centre is designed to provide services for both students and instructors at Carleton University in order to meet a variety of accommodation needs during scheduled tests and exams. Scheduling and Examinations Services (SES) operates the Centre in consultation with the Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities (PMC). PMC documents student accommodation needs, the details of which are shared with SES staff who are then responsible for ensuring appropriate accommodation arrangements for each student scheduled to write in this facility.
Instructors are required to submit on-line schedules for in-class tests or exams for any course(s) in which PMC students are registered (see Instructor Information on this site for more details). Based on PMC student registration details, SES determines the number of seats required for each course, as well as appropriate allocation of assistive devices or technology. In all cases, reservations are confirmed with both students and instructors via email (to a Carleton email address) in advance of the test date. Students should inform the examroom@carleton.ca when they do not intend to use a seat that has been reserved for them, to allow access for another student who may require the service.
Hours of operation
January to March, May, July and September to November:
- The Coordinator of the Exam Centre is on duty from 8:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday; and a Proctor is on duty until closing when exams are in session;
- In-Class tests or exams are scheduled in the Exam Centre with the same start time* as the class:
- between 8:30 a.m. and 10:00* p.m. Monday through Thursday; and
- between 8:30 a.m. & 5:00* p.m. on Fridays.
- However, no tests or exams will be given a finish time past closing. Extended time accommodations may therefore be scheduled with an earlier start time to that of the class. If this creates a conflict for the student, it is their responsibility to speak to the Instructor to discuss an alternate day/time. The Instructor is required to contact the Exam Centre Coordinator to discuss any alteration to the student reservation.
- CUTV mid-terms are scheduled in the McIntyre Exam Centre between 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on Fridays; and between 8:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Saturdays.
Unauthorized access to the Exam Centre is not permitted, as tests are in progress at all times during the hours of operation.
- Students with accommodation needs that have been documented through PMC will be provided a seat reservation for tests and exams. They will be permitted to enter the room a few minutes before their scheduled start time, to facilitate sign in and seating assignment. In some cases, students will be asked to wait outside until a Proctor is prepared to process their arrival information;
- Only Proctors on shift duty are permitted to enter the Exam Centre and converse with students, all others must report to the Exam Centre Coordinator Office;
- Only Instructors (or their designate – TA or administrative staff) with a scheduled exam, or who are dropping off or picking up exams are permitted to enter the Exam Centre – and must report to the Exam Centre Coordinator upon arrival;
- All other visitors are asked to schedule an appointment ahead of time, and are required to report to the Exam Centre Coordinator’s Office upon arrival.
Rules for use:
- The only beverage that is permitted in the McIntyre Exam Centre is water – in a sealable, transparent, non-breakable container;
- Food and beverages are not permitted in the Exam Centre – except for students with a PMC documented accommodation requiring food or drink during a test. Anyone arriving with unauthorized food or beverages will be required to consume or dispose of them before entering the facility; Note: Proctors are not permitted to make any exceptions to this rule.
- Electronic devices of any kind including cell phones and iPods are not permitted at the student’s exam workstation. Hooks are provided for coats and bags, but students are discouraged from bringing personal items of value with them to the Exam Centre.
- Calculators, and written notes are not permitted, unless the exam instructions authorize them, or the student’s PMC accommodation stipulates they are permitted.
- Student departure from the room before their exam is handed in is not permitted for any reason other than for washroom breaks – in the facilities adjacent to the Exam Centre – and only with sign-out permission from the on-duty Proctor. Smoking breaks are not permitted.
- Attendance and arrival times are noted for each student with a reservation in the McIntyre Exam Centre, and this information is reported back to the course Instructor at the conclusion of the test or exam.
