MJ student Marc Ellison won the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) award for student excellence, among many awards presented at the end of the CAJ’s annual conference, held in Ottawa over the weekend. Ellison was recognized for a story on former child soldiers in northern Uganda, published by the Toronto Star.

Judges had the discretion to name between one and five finalists in each award category. There were a total 177 entries for the 2012 awards program.

The Canadian Association of Journalists is a professional organization with over 500 members across Canada. The CAJ’s primary roles are public-interest advocacy work and professional development for its members.

The following story appeared in the May 6th issue of the Toronto Star.

Toronto Star freelancer wins CAJ award

Congrats to Toronto Star freelancer Marc Ellison for winning a CAJ award for his “The Girls of War” feature.

The piece appeared in the Star’s Childhood Interrupted series last May. The CAJ/CNW Group Student Award of Excellence “recognizes excellence in the field of journalism at the student level,” according the CAJ’s website.

The Vancouver-based photojournalist’s feature looked at how Uganda’s female child soldiers struggle to reintegrate into society. Videos and photos accompanied the story.

In the summer of 2011, Ellison interviewed 40 formerly abducted women in Uganda about their post-abduction difficulties. As part of the project, he gave some of the women cameras to allow them to document their own stories.

“Winning the CAJ award was honestly a huge surprise to me. At a time when foreign bureaus are closing due to operational costs, it’s often challenging to convince media outlets to carry freelanced international stories,” Ellison wrote in an email. “You also have to battle the public’s ‘why should I care?’ attitude towards articles covering issues in faraway lands.”

His research was funded by an International Development Research Centre award. It can be found at www.dwogpaco.com.

Ellison returned to Uganda in July 2012, and wrote a follow-up piece for the Star about how the women were doing.

Ellison is currently a part-time Masters of Journalism candidate at Carleton University. More about Ellison can be found here.

“In three minutes or less, each of the 20 grad students who participated wowed the crowd with their concise and compelling explanations of their research and how it impacts our lives,” said Wallace Clement, dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs. “This is not an easy feat considering the depth and complexity of research conducted at the graduate level.”

And the winners are:

• Third Place: Brian Crosland, from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, whose research focuses on Cleaner Air from Fire and Lasers.

Innocent-Bernard and Ambwani will now compete in the provincial championships being held at Queen’s University on April 18. Both walk away with cash prizes of $1,000 and $500 respectively while Crosland takes home a prize of $250.

Carleton University architecture graduate, Raymond Chu, was shortlisted for the international Graduate Architecture Award 2012 sponsored by Detail magazine. Chu submitted his thesis project, extra Extra SMALL! (XXS), which examines new minimal dwelling units in Hong Kong for the very poor.

“The opportunities and support I received from Carleton plays a significant role in my architecture career,” said Chu. “During my graduate studies, the professors supported the development of my thesis, extra Extra SMALL! – Learning from Poverty, Density, Housing, and Hong Kong with enthusiasm and expertise. In addition, Carleton supported me financially, with two scholarships that enabled me to focus on my studies and graduate with high distinction.

“Thanks to the education and people I met at Carleton, I continue to pursue my passion in architecture and use my skills to contribute to easing poverty and developing solutions for better living.”

Chu’s XXS submission was one of just 25 projects included as part of the award shortlist. The projects selected encompass a wide range of competencies in architecture, urbanism and design.

“Being included on this shortlist is significant given the range of international entries,” said Inderbir Singh Riar, lecturer at Carleton’s Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism and Chu’s thesis advisor. “Ray’s thesis project is remarkable from both an architectural and social standpoint. He did fundamental research in the Hong Kong archives, lived in one of the slum dwellings and produced a fine design project.”

Limited land, high-density population and overpriced housing have caused a major housing crisis in Hong Kong, forcing millions to resort to high-density housing that fails to provides even the bare minimum, with limited space, no ventilation, no sunlight and insect and mold infestations. These units are structurally unsound, with inadequate framing and partitioning drywalls.

XXS is a design that provides a housing solution for better living for Hong Kong’s poor. Through understanding, integrating and modifying the strategies that Hong Kong locals have developed over the years, XXS is a dwelling design that is both functional and practical. It’s functional in terms of providing a space that accommodates the residents’ daily needs and activities and practical in terms of being compatible with Hong Kong’s current housing and societal context.
