Situated on the 4th floor of MacOdrum Library, Learning Support Services (LSS) is a hive of activity for all Carleton students, including graduate students.
LSS offers 1-on-1 study skills appointments, where students meet with a learning specialist to complete a comprehensive assessment of their skills and receive coaching to achieve their goals.
“Grad students really use these 1-on-1 appointments particularly when they are having a hard time staying on track with their thesis or dissertation,” says Kelly Dumas, manager, Student Academic Success Centre.
LSS also offers study skill workshops which are run by peer helpers. Topics include subjects such as effective presentations, managing procrastination and strategies for proofreading. Other services include tutor referrals, scheduling Writing Tutorial appointments and reserving group study rooms.
“We know that grad students participate in our English conversation groups, especially if they completed an undergrad in their home country,” says Dumas. “These groups provide an opportunity for students to practice their English vocabulary and conversation skills which can help them both academically and socially.”
