The thesis must be expressed in a satisfactory literary form, consistent with the discipline concerned, and must display a scholarly approach to the subject and thorough knowledge of it. A critical review of previous work related to the subject should usually be given.
Students will not be permitted to submit a thesis for which they have previously received a degree. However, with the permission of the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs, a student may incorporate material into a current thesis that was included in a previous thesis.

Your thesis must follow the prescribed formatting. Paper quality, font, margins, pagination are all important to ensure the processing of your thesis.
The information contained on the title page is essential and must be complete and correspond to the information contained on your student and program file. (Template | Sample)
Small Roman numerals are used in the preliminary section. All pages are to be numbered except for the title page on which number “i” is implied but not given. Make sure to include your preliminary pages in the Table of Contents. The accepted order for the preliminary pages is as follows:
- Title page
- Abstract
- Acknowledgements
- Table of Contents
- List of Tables
- List of Illustrations
- List of Appendices
Illustrative material must be included in the pagination and must be properly labelled on the page. Refer to the Formatting page for details.
If your thesis has accompanying material this must be clearly noted on the envelope that your thesis is submitted in. The accompanying material must be clearly labelled to ensure that it is not misplaced.
In order to process your thesis the Licence to Carleton University must be completed. In order to digitize your thesis the Library and Archives Canada licence and the Proquest Subject Code form must be completed.
Ensure your name on the licences matches the name on your thesis title page and the name with which you are registered at Carleton University.
Please note: neither the Carleton licence nor the Library and Archives Canada license can be altered or modified.
It is important to remember that the signed signatures page from your board, any private information and copyright permission letters are not to be included within the thesis document itself.
Two unbound copies, in separate envelopes and clearly labelled, are needed for FGPA to forward to the Library to be entered into the collection. Include one extra copy of the title page and abstract with the envelopes. Check with your department for their copy requirements.
