Home / Services – University Safety

  • Did you know that we now have over 500 security cameras on campus?
  • Did you know that by dialing 4444 from any telephone on campus, you will immediately be linked with the campus safety office?
  • Did you know that there are over 300 emergency/assistance phones on campus including 13 exterior yellow emergency/assistance phones along the Safe Paths?

University Safety offers many services to Carleton students, including graduate students.

Twenty-four hours a day, teams of officers from the Department of University Safety (DUS) constantly patrol the campus to help keep you safe. Carleton’s Special Constables are sworn Peace Officers under the authority of the Ottawa Police Service.

DUS offers a number of programs to enhance student safety. Those staying late on campus are encouraged to make use of the Safe Path – a route that is well lit, commonly travelled and consists of a number of emergency/assistance phones that are directly linked with DUS.

Individuals who are working late on campus are also encouraged to make use of the DUS’s Working After Hours Program. This is a free service on evenings, weekends and holidays, whereby Safety officers conduct routine patrols at your location and can also provide an escort to your vehicle, bus stop or residence. To register for the Working After Hours Program, contact DUS at 613-520-3612. A series of safety tips is posted on this site.

The Carleton University Student Emergency Response Team (CUSERT) operates under the Department of University Safety and provides a free on-call, advanced first aid service 24 hours a day, seven days a week on campus and at university-sponsored events. The team can use equipment such as automated external defibrillators, oxygen and spinal immobilization devices.

As a division of the department, Technical Services maintains the integrity of the physical security systems on campus including access control, alarm systems, wireless security systems and groundbreaking technologies that offer 24/7 video monitoring.

The Safety Department encourages all grad students to register their cellphone numbers in order to receive Emergency Notification System text messages. More information is available here.

Safety also operates Parking Services on campus as well as managing locker rentals. To register online, just go to http://www.carleton.ca/parking.

A Community Liaison Officer works for the Safety Department, providing crime prevention services, liaising with various community groups and offering presentations on personal safety and crime prevention programs.

You can check out all of the safety programs (from bike and laptop registration to the personal safety tips) by going to this website.
