Why Child Studies?

Carleton University is one of the few universities in the country to offer advanced education in Child Studies for students who have completed college diplomas in the field of Early Childhood Education. Our Child Studies program responds to the need, within today’s rapidly shifting job market, for those with higher levels of learning in this growing field. Entry into Child Studies at Carleton requires a completed Early Childhood Education (ECE) diploma. Your studies with us will allow you to build on your acquired knowledge and skills, helping you learn more about the theory and research leading to the development of modern child care practices. A completed ECE diploma will allow you to receive up to one year of advanced standing towards your degree in Child Studies.

The Child Studies program has been in operation for fifteen years. It is an example of an “articulated” program, which integrates the hands-on learning of college studies with the broader perspective and greater knowledge base available through university study. The BA Child Studies degree is not intended to provide job training, but builds on the ECE diploma and makes students better prepared to handle a variety of jobs and challenges.

What Could a Degree in Child Studies Do for me?

A degree in Child Studies from Carleton University will qualify you for a variety of managerial positions, including senior administrative, directorial, and research positions in public and private sector agencies. Our graduates find challenging work in day-care centers, half-day programs, infant and toddler centers, private home day-care agencies, after-hour programs, hospital playrooms, infant stimulation programs, and community centre programs. If you’re interested in the teaching profession, your BA in Child Studies degree qualifies you for entry to Teacher’s College for the Teaching Certificate (B. Ed). We also offer an Honours BA with thesis in preparation for graduate training in Psychology, Sociology or Child Studies.
