The following are graduate courses in anthropology available in 2010-11. Anthropology M.A. students may also register for graduate courses in sociology, and with permission of their advisor, a limited number of graduate courses outside the department, at the University of Ottawa, or at the 4th year undergraduate level in anthropology. See the Graduate Calendar (available online) under Programs for specific course requirements and regulations for the M.A. and Ph.D..

There are 2 required courses, Anth 5401 and 5402, and one highly recommended course (for students intending to do a thesis or research essay), Anth 5812. Incoming M.A. students are not expected to register in thesis credits in their first year. If you are a new student, please consult your Temporary Advisor for advice on course selection by the first week of classes.

Anthropology of Indigeneity

An international exploration of what it means to claim “indigenousness” within a variety of contexts. The cultural politics of indigenous status in relation to such issues as primitivism, memory and revivalism in modern nation-states and diasporic communities.

Special Topics in the Anthropology of Africa: Anthropology of Africa/Africanizing Anthropology: Cartographies of Knowledge and Power

How current conceptual approaches in the Anthropology of Africa have influenced wider perspectives within Anthropology (e.g., witchcraft, anthropology of development) and vice versa are examined. Through reading current ethnographies, how the questions asked and concepts deployed inform what anthropologists take as African realities are explored.

Theoretical and methodological approaches to the anthropology of signs and symbols, including the internal workings of symbolic systems, and their relationship to other aspects of social life. (Also listed as RELI 5403.)

Special Topics in Anthropology: Anthropology of Performance

Performance is a most seminal concept in contemporary social and cultural theory. Students will discuss classic texts in performance theory, performative genres (ritual, theater, play) in various cultures and gain a sense of the productive role of performance in society and culture.

Selected Topics in the Anthropology of Development and Underdevelopment: Processes of Development and Underdevelopment: Local and Global Contributions and Insights

A critical examination of methodological, ethical, and epistemological debates related to development and underdevelopment. It focuses specifically on various concepts and strategies related to the theory and practice of ‘development’ at local and international levels, and highlights the complexity involved in development processes.

Doctoral Seminar: Theory and Method in Contemporary Anthropology

An in-depth exploration of theory and method in contemporary socio-cultural anthropology with special emphasis on engaged anthropology. This course is required of all first year doctoral students in anthropology.
