The following are graduate courses in anthropology available in 2010-11. Anthropology M.A. students may also register for graduate courses in sociology, and with permission of their advisor, a limited number of graduate courses outside the department, at the University of Ottawa, or at the 4th year undergraduate level in anthropology. See the Graduate Calendar (available online) under Programs for specific course requirements and regulations for the M.A. and Ph.D..
There are 2 required courses, Anth 5401 and 5402, and one highly recommended course (for students intending to do a thesis or research essay), Anth 5812. Incoming M.A. students are not expected to register in thesis credits in their first year. If you are a new student, please consult your Temporary Advisor for advice on course selection by the first week of classes.

Anthropology of Indigeneity
An international exploration of what it means to claim “indigenousness” within a variety of contexts. The cultural politics of indigenous status in relation to such issues as primitivism, memory and revivalism in modern nation-states and diasporic communities.

How current conceptual approaches in the Anthropology of Africa have influenced wider perspectives within Anthropology (e.g., witchcraft, anthropology of development) and vice versa are examined. It focuses specifically on various concepts and strategies related to the theory and practice of ‘development’ at local and international levels, and highlights the complexity involved in development processes.
