Home / Teaching Assistants

Hello Sociology & Anthropology Teaching Assistants!

I am very excited to be the 2011 – 2012 TA Mentor. The program is designed to provide you with the support and skills you need to succeed as a teaching assistant at Carleton. As a TA mentor, I am a general resource for TAing at Carleton and I would like to encourage everyone, especially first-time TAs, to talk with me one-on-one about any questions, advice, or concerns you may have. Throughout the year, I will also be working to set up course-specific mentoring between new and experienced TAs, facilitating peer observations, and providing workshops.

Workshops will be offered on topics such as:

  • marking assignments and exams,
  • facilitating discussion groups,
  • career development, and
  • how to prepare a guest lecture.

The Mentor program also brings teaching assistants together through socials and other events. I hope to see you there!

Jordan Fairbairn

TA Excellence Award 2011-12

TA Awards recognize TAs that show excellence in supporting undergraduate students in their learning experience at Carleton. TAs may be nominated by faculty, instructors, and/or undergraduate students.  Please consider nominating a TA.

This year there are two ways to put forward a nomination:

Departmental Award Consideration: Submit a nomination directly to the department. Please note that Faculty and Instructors may only submit one nomination per semester. Students may nominate more than one TA, and TAs may be nominated by more than one student.

Please use the departmental award nomination form and  review the guidelines for details on the nomination process and selection criteria. If nominating for the departmental awards only, please submit your Winter 2012 nomination to Loeb B750 or via email to Soc&AnthroTAMentor@carleton.ca by Tuesday, April 10, 2012.

EDC and Departmental Award Consideration: Deadline has passed

*New this year*: by being nominated for an EDC TA award, TAs will also be considered for the Departmental awards through the same process. This allows the TA you nominate to have two opportunities to be the recipient of a TA award, a $250.00 prize, and their names displayed on the TA award plaque.

Further information and the electronic application can be found at www6.carleton.ca/tasupport/awards-nomination-form/.
